Our Fake Whole 30

Update (day 18)

Even though we quit Whole 30 on day 8 (really on day 1 since we never eliminated beer), we have been sticking to the dinner plans I made. So we are still making Whole 30 dinners every night (exception of sushi outing one night), and that usually means leftovers for lunch.
We have not reintroduced grains, legumes (with the exception of a chocolate torte that used black beans), or dairy.
We are eating sugar and drinking beer. And we both feel great.

We will likely try out oatmeal again since that’s our go-to breakfast on long run days. But neither of us miss dairy, grains, or legumes at all.

Courtney: woke up tired.

This is the day we quit. I was tired all the time, and starting to get really depressed. All I wanted to do was make cookies or something.
I jumped up on the bed at the same time as the dog, and we head-butted each other. I started crying and didn’t stop for 15 minutes. That’s when ken said we could quit and I could make sweets.
Funny thing is, I looked through my entire sweets board on Pinterest and couldn’t decide on anything to make! We got stuff for s’mores and I made them, and they weren’t amazing like I expected them to be.

Dinner –

This dinner was AMAZING! Definitely a contender for Day 30, which is when we make my favorite meal from the first 28 days. Most of our meals make enough for leftovers the next day, but this did not. Just 2 servings, but that’s probably a good thing, because I would have gone back for seconds if there were any!

Snacks –
Ken: banana, grapefruit, leftover Rosemary Roasted Brussels & Rutabaga
Courtney: apple, Brazil nuts, blueberry muffin Larabar, beer, meat & spinach muffin

Feeling
Ken: normal
Courtney: normal except a headache which could be unrelated. Possibly more energy than usual.

Day 2

We both felt tired when we woke up. Nothing to do with Fake Whole 30 (FW30) – probably due to our long weekend in Jax and the marathon. It was another poorly planned morning though. Ken had to take off for an 8am meeting and still doesn’t know what he’s “allowed” to eat, so he took a Larabar. I had my coffee and got a late start at the gym, so I didn’t have breakfast till 10am

Day 1

We just got back from Jacksonville last night. Ken ran a marathon yesterday and I ran a half marathon. Even though I made some muffins before we left and I had them in the freezer ready to go today, I didn’t do the best job planning for today. So breakfasts were Larabars, which the Hartwigs call “emergency snacks”.

Breakfast

Ken: Larabar, apple pie

Courtney: Larabar, blueberry muffin

Lunch

Ken: Meat & Spinach Muffin

Courtney: 2 Meat & Spinach Muffins20140225-203540.jpg

Snacks

Ken: Kombucha, grapefruit, beer

Courtney: Brazil Nuts, homemade coconut butter with cacao nibs, beer

So….Our First Whole 30 was going really well for about the first 8 hours. We were 100% on plan.

Then this happened:

20140224-181254.jpg

And I had to change the name of the blog from Our First Whole 30 to Our Fake Whole 30.

We decided we won’t cut out the beer.

And we realize this means we are NOT doing Whole 30. One of the rules is you don’t flex rules. You’re 100% compliant, or you’re not doing Whole 30.

And we decided we’re ok with that 🙂
